An amazing and historic moment for the GLBT community in Nepal. Here are some excerpts from the BBC News article:
"Nepal's Supreme Court has ordered the government to scrap laws that discriminate against homosexuals.
The court ordered that sexual minorities should be guaranteed the same rights as other citizens.
'Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and intersex are
natural persons irrespective of their masculine and feminine gender and
they have the right to exercise their rights and live an independent
life in society.'
Activists said it was a landmark ruling.
'It's a very encouraging and progressive decision. We
all feel we are liberated today,' Sunil Babu Pant, the president of the
Blue Diamond Society which campaigns for Nepal's sexual minorities,
told the AFP news agency."
When i read this today i became VERY excited for the GLBT Nepalese people. After i read it to Katryna, i told her that Nepal is way more progressive than the USA. Our inept Congress does not wait to get hate crime legislation and anti-discrimination legislation passed for the GLBT community when a pro-gay president won't veto it, rather it makes an "attempt" during this even more inept administration. Emperor Bush has promised to veto both, if and when presented with the bills.
For the love of God, our country is one of the wealthiest and most powerful sovereign nations in the world and our GLBT community is treated like second-class citizens. What happened to the separation of church and state, not imposing any one religion on people, religious freedom, and the Constitution saying we are ALL created equal. Why does the religious right continue to say homosexuality undermines the family. We are in loving relationships and some gays have families more healthy than heterosexual families. It irritates me to no end that we are NOT ALL EQUAL in this, the land of the free, that Emperor Bush so fiercely misleads our nation for. We are NOT freaks, we are NOT sinners, we ARE lovable, we ARE loved by G-D, and we are NOT an abomination.
People like to inaccurately quote scriptures supporting their closed-minded views towards the GLBT community. If they follow Leviticus, then why don't they follow ALL the Levitical laws? Why do they continue to pick and choose scriptures to fancy and support their hateful, hurtful and bigoted views. Much of the Bible needs to be looked at in its historical context which pertained to their customs and time and were NEVER meant to be for ALL time. So, anyone who disagrees with me is free to their opinions but i lived too many years thinking and believing these horrible lies that i lived a life of bondage. Now i have come to understand a little more about scripture and i am at peace with G-D and myself. i am FINALLY free, respect who i am, even if the land of the free, the good ol' U S of A does not fully embrace me.
WHEW, it felt great to get that off my chest. i haven't had a feel-good rant like that in ages! :)
